Set in South Africa, District 9 begins as a mock documentary about the imminent eviction of extraterrestrials from a shantytown called District 9. The creatures, nicknamed ‘prawns’, have been on Earth for years, having arrived sickly and starving. Initially received by humans with compassion and care, the aliens are now mired in terrible conditions typical of long-term refugee camps, unwanted by a hostile host society.

The alien refugees soon discover a kindred spirit in Wikus, a government agent who is accidentally exposed to their biotechnology and starts to mutate into a ‘prawn.’ Wikus must find a cure for his transformation as well as helping the refugee aliens return home.

Friday 13th April 10.30am – 3.30pm

BFI Southbank, London

We hope that you will be able to join us to discuss these and many more questions on April 13th in the Blue Room at the BFI Southbank from 11am-4pm – refreshments will be provided.

There is no cost for attending. All you need to do is to bring your ideas and be ready to debate! We hope that teachers, film practitioners, training providers and other educationalists will be able to attend.

“Alongside audience development, film education has a vital role to play in ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to engage with film across the UK. By enhancing the stock of knowledge and information about film, in particular among children and young people, film education can assist in growing the audience of today and tomorrow, ensuring that audiences have an improved understanding and appreciation of the value of different kinds of film, whilst stimulating creativity.” From “A Future for British Film”, 2012

With the Film 21st Century Literacy Strategy coming to an end and its advocacy document [Integrating Film into Education] recently published, now seems an appropriate moment to consider what exactly is meant by “film education”.

· Is there a coherent understanding of what film education is supposed to achieve?

· Does film education address specific knowledge and understanding or is it exclusively about creativity? Or should it be a combination of all of these? If so, how can an integrated film education be achieved?

· Are the aims of film education the same for children (and people) of all ages, in all settings, or should it be inflected by different contexts?

· How can we get any closer to agreeing on what is actually meant by film education?

BFI Southbank – Friday 3rd February (6 – 8:30pm) and Saturday 4th February 2012 (09:30-3:00pm)

This conference is jointly convened by the Media Education Association with the assistance and generous use of the learning spaces from the British Film Institute.

It is aimed at drawing in some new voices to the association and driving some activity forward in 2012.This conference brings together a range of new voices from Primary, Secondary, FE and Higher Education.

The workshops in the conference provide a range of narratives from different areas of the education system. Some are focused on how to teach aspects of the formal syllabus for media at GCSE/AS level and beyond. Other workshops focus on how children learn about the media. Yet others are focused on our own education as media teachers and how we can become better teachers of the media.
