Using photographs in the classroom

One photograph

Take a tightly cropped photograph glued to a larger piece of paper. Draw the rest of the picture

Annotate a photograph, labelling as many things as possible in the picture that help you understand what it means

Write a caption

Write two different, conflicting captions

Use it as the basis for an advertisement or film poster

Write a news story about it

Write a poem about it

Write a letter from a character in the photograph describing what happened before and afterwards

Crop the picture (using two L-shaped pieces of card) to change its meaning. How many different meanings can you give it?

Two or more photographs

Write a story which links the photographs

Write and act a dialogue between characters in the two photographs

Write letters between the individuals in the photographs.

Use several photographs as a storyboard: write a voiceover.

Take photographs for

a print advertisement

a photo-story

a report

stills from a film

an exhibition

a news report

illustrating a poem
